The DOK space was a wonderful building made by apprentice ship yard workers in the early years of WW2. This association gave me the opportunity to reflect on the industrial past of the area and the ultimate conclusion of the ships built there in the ship breaking yards of India.

The sound in this piece created a sense of the scale of shipbuilding environments and is overlaid with a chant to the Hindu god Kali, who is thought to protect workers in the shipyards.

Within the imposing steel walls of The Shed, I set several multimedia sculptures which brought together sound, moving image and written words. The centrepiece of the exhibition was 2 kinetic sculpture which used speakers below pools of water to create wave patterns on the surface of the water which was tinged with powders which appeared metallic.

In the shipyard, they built a steel arc to protect the secrets of unborn boats from the weapons of the future. Men and boys carried out sacred instructions, binding together the plates with skills and machines of the past.

Looking back to the dock through stationary port holes, you could question the purpose of the exercise. Why keep things safe in the place of greatest danger?
A garden shed in Penicuik would be safer than a steel shed in a shipyard. Looking through the same port hole doesn't mean you see the same horizon.
